The NCSS Code of Ethics outlines six guiding principles that frame ethical decision-making for social studies professionals: integrity, justice, authenticity, civic engagement, responsibility, and democratic values. Integrity emphasizes honesty, transparency, and accountability in content, pedagogy, assessment/professional relationships, ensuring that knowledge is represented accurately and respectfully. Justice focuses on creating equitable learning environments by acknowledging student identities, providing access to multiple perspectives, and engaging students in understanding rights, responsibilities, and fairness within society. Authenticity centers on maintaining the dignity of knowledge and relationships by encouraging honest dialogue, inquiry, and genuine engagement with real-world issues. Civic engagement highlights the responsibility of social studies educators to prepare students for active participation in democratic life through questioning, critical thinking, and real civic experiences. Responsibility addresses professional accountability to students, families, colleagues, and communities through ethical curriculum choices, collaboration, and continued professional growth. Finally, democratic values stress culturally competent, inclusive pedagogy that honors diversity and protects students’ dignity and civil and human rights. Together, these six principles clarify that ethical social studies teaching extends far beyond content delivery.
